This Berkeley, California home blends the split-timber detailing of a classic Tudor home on the exterior with Craftsman-style custom built-ins and hand-crafted finishes on the interior. We transformed the existing interior layout and building systems, and expanded the usable space into the attic to improve efficiency and functionality of the home. We provided full interior design and architectural services for large scale remodel.
Working closely with each family member, we customized each interior space to reflect their love of books, music and the cinema. The children’s rooms feel like the coziest of libraries with reading nooks and plush upholstery – all bespoke. Details throughout include hand-painted wallpaper and beaded upholstery panels from DeGournay, wrought-iron handrails, blown glass sconces were created by local artisans and handmade ceramic tiles are a nod to the original home.
While we leaned into the traditional design of its Craftsman roots, the home’s infrastructure includes cutting edge sustainable systems such as a Hydraloop gray water recycling system, and solar-powered storage batteries. In combining classic design with sustainable technology, we’ve created a home that honors its traditional setting while embracing the needs of the future.
